Teaching & Learning
Welcome to the Teaching & Learning department. In keeping with our mission to prepare students for a successful future in a changing world, BHM Schools takes pride in delivering a strong, well-rounded, quality education. Students graduate from Buffalo High School with a broad liberal arts background, supported by a comprehensive K-12 curriculum that deals with life-related issues, problem solving, and critical thinking.
Research tells us that students learn more in schools that emphasize a curriculum that is articulated K-12 and focused on strong academic courses. The curriculum is organized to promote learning through well-articulated, rigorous instructional programs and courses. Our curriculum is enhanced by:
- A focus on results and achievement in core curricular areas through the use of SMART goals.
- Assessment that strives to help students demonstrate growth over time.
- Differentiation of learning experiences to respond to student needs, talents, and interests.
- A commitment to continually improve student learning and success.
BHM District Academic Goals 2011-12
District Goal #1: (Proficiency)
Demonstrate a 3.7% increase in the overall percentage of students meeting proficiency standards on the MCA in math, and demonstrate a 3.3% increase in the overall percentage of students meeting proficiency standards on the MCA in reading.
Supporting Data (evidence of need):
The BHM district is currently cited as a district "needing improvement" because it has not met the AYP standards.
| Students demonstrating proficiency: | Math | Reading |
| Actual results 2009-10 | 69.2% | 78.3% |
| Actual results 2010-11 | 61.1% | 78.7% |
| Target results 2011-2012 | 64.8% | 82.0% |
District Goal #2: (Academic Growth)
Score at the 90th percentile or above in school percentile ranks established by NWEA for fall to spring growth index averages at all grade levels in both reading and math.
Supporting Data (evidence of need):
In an effort to encourage the growth of all students in math and reading, BHM has adopted a district goal that average growth will equal the 90th percentile of schools nationwide. To do this we will look at "growth index averages" which measure growth above that which is "typical." The chart below has the average RIT points above the norm to reach the 90th percentile, as well as data for the district's students during 2010-11. While three grades attained these levels in math and reading during 2010-11, our goal is for all grades to reach these thresholds during 2011-12.
Math | 2nd Grade | 3rd Grade | 4th Grade | 5th Grade | 6th Grade | 7th Grade | 8th Grade |
